I have found an interesting randomized trial in the American Medical Association about the effect of massage therapy on osteoarthritis of the knee.
Basically, they took a group of 68 adults with confirmed osteoarthritis of the knee.
They divided in 2 two groups.
They gave Swedish massage twice a week during 4 weeks and once a week in the following 4 weeks to one group. The other group wasn't given any treatment but was controlled.
The findings were significant improvements in pain, stiffness, range of motion and time to walk 15 meters.
The trial conclusion is that massage therapy seems to effective in the treatment of osteoarthritis of the knee but that further study should be done to check the cost effectiveness and duration of the treatment effect.
I have had several patients with osteoarthritis and the symptoms of osteoarthritis was always diminished after treatments so for me it is not news but a confirmation that you can relieve some pain and stiffness with massage.
People are less incline to get drugs on a regular basis, which is great!
It also shows the effectiveness of natural therapies to help people with degenerative conditions in their day to day life!
